Just a little routine care can extend the life of your GORE-TEX® gear and ensure it stays waterproof, windproof, and breathable. A little care in return keeps it performing at its best.

With the launch of GORE-TEX® ePE, regular washing is more important than ever, but regardless of what membrane you’re caring for, these instructions will help keep your apparel fresh, protective, and ready for many more miles, rides, and adventures.

Why washing matters

Contrary to what many people believe, GORE-TEX® garments need regular washing to keep their membranes breathing and free of performance-blocking oils, dirt and grit, even if they don’t look dirty. If your GORE-TEX® apparel is starting to “wet out” or mud and dirt are clinging to the surface, it’s definitely time for a wash.

Don’t neglect your gear

It’s easy to forget about taking care of your GORE-TEX® garments, but by putting your apparel through the steps we’ve outlined below, you can rest easy after every adventure, safe in the knowledge that your gear’s going to be ready to perform for the long haul.

How to wash GORE-TEX®

Step 1 — Prep

To get your garments ready to wash, ensure all pockets are empty, close all zips and make sure any substantial dirt has been wiped off.

Step 2 — Wash

Wash GORE-TEX® garments on their own cycle, making sure to use a regular liquid detergent free of fabric softeners or extra oils (Grangers is great - Tide will work in a pinch). Avoid using powder detergents and never use bleach or a fabric softener. Set the machine to warm and a wrinkle free/permanent press cycle if available.

Step 3 — Dry

When the machine has done its job, hang your GORE-TEX® pieces to dry until they’re no longer dripping then pop them in the tumble dryer on a warm setting until completely dry.

The key here is heat - the tumble dryer helps to reactivate the garment’s DWR treatment and will keep it beading. This step can be repeated anytime you notice the water repellency needs a boost.
